Experience Sampling Forms Questions
- What is an Experience Sampling Form?
An experience sampling form is a questionnaire that asks you to answer a few simple questions about your current activity or experience and how you feel about that activity or experience. Most people take about two minutes to fill out each form.
- I received a text message / signal to fill out an Experience Sampling Form at a time when I was unable to do so. What should I do?
Please fill out the Experience Sampling Form as soon as it is possible or safe for you to do so. Never attempt to fill out an Experience Sampling Form in any situation that might cause you harm, such as when you are driving a car or operating machinery.
- Do I need to fill out an Experience Sampling Form every time I receive a text message / signal to fill one out?
Yes, unless filling out the form would cause you to be harmed in some way. For example, if you were driving at the time you received a text message / signal you should not attempt to fill out a form while you are operating the vehicle.
- Unless filling out the form would harm you in some way or the situation you are in would make it impossible, you should fill out an Experience Sampling Form every time you are signaled. We are trying to understand what families do on a day-to-day basis and how they feel about the things they are doing so it is important that you report your life as it actually is – including all the joys and problems that you may encounter.

- How often will I receive a text message / signal to fill out an Experience Sampling Form?
You can expect to receive between 7 and 10 signals per day. These signals will come at random times during the day.
- We are trying to understand what families do on a day-to-day basis and how they feel about the things they are doing so it is important that you report your life as it actually is – including all the joys and problems that you may encounter. Please do your best to respond to each and every signal that you receive, unless filling out a form would cause you to be harmed in some way (e.g., if you receive a signal while driving).
- Do I need to carry the booklet of Experience Sampling Forms with me at all times?
Yes. You may be signaled to fill out an Experience Sampling Form at any time during the time you are awake so it is important that you have access to these forms at all times.
- We are trying to understand what families do on a day-to-day basis and how they feel about the things they are doing so it is important that you report your life as it actually is – including all the joys and problems that you may encounter. We won’t be able to get an accurate a picture of daily family life if you don’t carry the forms with you at all times.
- I’d rather fill out the Experience Sampling Form online. Is there an online version available?
Yes. An online version is available if it is more convenient for you. Generally, for most people the paper version is still the most convenient unless you have ready access to a computer at the time you are signaled. The online version of the Experience Sampling Form may be accessed by clicking HERE
Cell Phone Questions
- A cell phone was issued to me for this study – can I use this phone for personal use?
No. The phones may be used for study purposes only. Our research budget does not permit us to supply participants with cell phones for personal use. In general, the phones should only be used to receive text messages / signals from the research team. They should not be used to send text/messages or make calls for non-study related purposes. The phones may be used to make outgoing calls if you need to contact the research team with a study-related question.
- Unauthorized use of the phones will result in a reduction of the $75.00 gift certificate offered to families for participation in the study.
- I haven’t received any text messages / signals to fill out an Experience Sampling Form.
First, please check to make sure your cell phone is on / has power. If everything appears to be normal please contact a member of the research team as soon as possible.
