Who is conducting the study?

The study is being conducted by a team of faculty and student researchers in the Department of Communications at Brigham Young University. The study is being headed by Dr. John Davies, assistant professor in the Department of Communications. Click here for more information on the research team.

What would I be asked to do if I choose to participate?

In this study, each family member 12 years of age or older will be asked to fill out several, brief questionnaires. These questionnaires take about two minutes to complete and simply ask ‘what are you doing?’ and ‘how are you feeling?” during certain times of the day. In addition, they ask you to describe the activity you are currently doing.

The study takes place over 5 days. During each day of the study we will ask you to complete approximately 7 to 10 questionnaires at random times when you are awake. With your permission, we will send a text message to your cell phone signaling you to complete a questionnaire. If you do not have a cell phone, we will supply you with a phone to be used during the study. The total time commitment each day of the study is anticipated to be approximately 15 minutes per day.

Prior to the start of the study and on completion of the study, we will ask you to complete additional questionnaires that take about 10 minutes each to complete.

Is the study confidential?

Yes, the study is completely confidential. We will not use any information we collect to personally identify you or any of your family members. In addition, any contact information we collect from you is strictly for the purpose of communicating with you during the study itself. After you complete the study, we will destroy all records containing any contact information you supply to us. We will never sell or give your contact information to a third party.

Once I complete the study, will I be contacted to participate in future studies?

No. Once you complete the study we will not attempt to contact you again. If you choose to do so, you may let us know whether you would like to participate in future studies and we will keep your name on file for future reference, but we will not contact you again without your explicit permission.
